Oscars.

This is super last minute, but I do have some thoughts on the Oscars this year. More than ever I'm aware of how dumb the Academy is, yet I'm also keenly aware of how much I still care.

There are NINE films nominated this year, which is as silly as it sounds. Honestly, why nine? If you're going to nominate a butt-ton of movies, why not round up to an even ten? I think they really need to go back to five nominees, there just doesn't need to be that many movies crowding up the best picture category.

I have seen all of them, though. There's none that are really bad, most of them are just really safe, which is pretty typical for the Academy Awards. I don't think anyone is going to watch Philomena and think it's complete garbage, I also doubt that it blew anyone away either. I liked Nebraska and Captain Phillips, too. But they're not awe-inspiring films. The Best Picture Category seems to have become "nine movies that we really liked".

I'm also going to go on the record and say I do NOT understand the hype over American Hustle. Is it entertaining? Yes. Are the performances solid? Yes. But beyond that, there's not a lot of depth to this film. It's a lot of style with not a lot of substance. And Jennifer Lawrence's performance as the ditzy housewife is for sure my pick for the most overrated performance of the year, especially after she admitted that she based the accent on the Real Housewives of New Jersey.

And please- will someone just give Jennifer Lawrence a role that's her own age? I'm really getting tired of watching her play a teenager in The Hunger Games one week and then a 30-year-old opposite Bradley Cooper/Christian Bale the next.

I'll also mention that I saw all the Academy Award nominated short films this year, courtesy of Cleveland Cinemas and the Capitol Theatre. This is the first year I've ever done that and it was really great seeing all of them. Here are my picks for the shorts this year:

Live Action- Helium

Animated- Mr. Hublot

Documentary- CaveDigger

If you get a chance to view these (or any of the other nominated short films) I highly recommend them.

Happy Oscar Watching!
